How to match fabrics for your first patchwork project

Are you just starting with patchwork and not sure how to choose fabrics that will work well together? Choosing fabrics can feel a little overwhelming at first, but it is actually one of the most enjoyable parts of the whole creative process.

Patchwork is all about combining colors, patterns, and contrast. Sometimes a soft, harmonious palette works beautifully. Other times, a bolder combination you would not expect at first can bring the whole project to life. You just need to follow a few simple guidelines.

1. Start with one main fabric

Choose a fabric that catches your eye first. It might have a stronger pattern, a favorite color, or a motif you want to build the project around.

Then choose the other fabrics to go with it. Look for shades that already appear in the main fabric, or colors that complement it nicely. This will help the whole project feel thoughtful and balanced, even when you are combining several patterns at once.

2. Do not be afraid of contrast

A beautiful patchwork project usually does not come from fabrics that are all equally bold. It also needs calmer areas where the main prints have space to stand out.

Try combining lighter and darker tones, small-scale prints with larger motifs, or simpler fabrics with more eye-catching ones. Contrast adds depth to your project and helps each piece stand out more clearly.

3. Stay within a color palette

If you do not feel ready for more adventurous combinations yet, start with a simpler color palette. Choose two or three main colors and work within their shades.

Soft pink and apricot tones will create a gentle and harmonious look. Blue, green, or neutral shades will give you a calmer and more elegant result. The narrower your palette, the easier it will be to combine your fabrics.

4. Try things out and place the fabrics next to each other

You often only recognize the best combination once you lay the fabrics side by side. Sometimes you will be surprised by what works together. And sometimes you will realize that a fabric you love on its own does not stand out in a particular project the way you expected.

So do not be afraid to move things around, add a calmer print, or bring in one stronger motif. Patchwork is about finding balance — and that is exactly where its magic lies.
